Annapolis REMO - Hurricane Season has arrived! Be Prepared!

Atlantic Hurricane Season is Here: Annapolis REMO Encourages Residents to Prepare

ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, JUNE 3, 2026 – Atlantic hurricane season is underway, and the Annapolis
Regional Emergency Management Organization (Annapolis REMO) is encouraging residents
to prepare for potential storms.

Currently, the outlook suggests a below-normal season overall, but it only takes one storm
to have serious local impacts. The effects of Hurricane Fiona in 2022 remain a clear
reminder of this.

“Preparation is one of the most important steps residents can take,” said Brian Orde,
Annapolis REMO Coordinator. “Having a plan and basic supplies ready ahead of time can
make a real difference when severe weather arrives because even storms that pass
offshore can bring heavy rain, flooding, storm surge, strong winds, fallen trees, and
prolonged power outages.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a typical
season sees about 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
Presently, forecasters are predicting eight to 14 named storms (winds of 63 km/h or higher).
Of these, three to six may become hurricanes (winds of 119 km/h or higher), including one
to three major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5, with winds of 179 km/h or higher). NOAA
places about a 70 per cent confidence level on these ranges.

Orde urges residents to take time now to review their emergency plans, assemble a 72-
hour emergency kit, secure their property, and stay informed throughout the hurricane
season.

“And, remember, being ready isn't just about protecting your own household,” said Orde.
“Take the time to check on neighbours before and after storms, especially seniors, those
living alone, or anyone who may need additional support. A simple phone call, text
message, or visit can make a meaningful difference during an emergency.”

There are many resources available to help residents prepare, according to Orde.
