Atlantic Hurricane Season Is Here – Be Ready Before the Storm
Annapolis Regional Emergency Management Organization (Annapolis REMO) is reminding everyone that the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1 and continues through November 30.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this will be an above-normal season with 13 to 19 named storms expected, that may result in six to ten hurricanes, with three to five being major hurricanes that could have potential winds exceeding 119 km/h.
The region continues to reflect on the widespread impact of Hurricane Fiona in 2022, which resulted in loss of life, severe coastal flooding, prolonged power outages, massive tree damage, and over $800 million in damages across Atlantic Canada.
“Don’t wait until a storm is on the horizon,” said Brian Orde, Annapolis REMO Coordinator. “Preparing now, before a hurricane threatens, can significantly reduce the impact to you, your family, and your property. Planning ahead truly makes all the difference.”
Five Key Steps to Prepare for Hurricane Season:
Develop a Family Emergency Plan
Discuss evacuation routes, identify meeting locations, and establish a communication strategy in the event of separation. Ensure your plan includes provisions for pets and individuals with special needs.
Build or Update Your Emergency Kit
Your kit should include drinking water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, cash, necessary medications, hygiene supplies, and copies of important documents.
Prepare Your Property
Inspect your home for potential hazards, secure loose outdoor items, clear gutters, and ensure sump pumps and backup power sources are functional.
